Anjugramam
No one really knows the origin of its name. Maybe the
convergence of five ancient villages came to be known as Anjugramam
or possibly it’s named after some one called Anju, who lived and
died here long long ago in time. Whatever it may be, Anjugramam, a
tiny intersection with a lone sweet stall years ago, has today
transformed into a bustling commercial hub. Its distinct advantage
is its geographical location nestled in lush green rice fields,
coconut palm and a dense landscape, a sight to behold! Nature has
endowed this place with all its fauna and flora.
As being the poor man’s Nagercoil, Anjugramam serves the
villages and hamlets around it. It is a cosmopolitan town as also
a major junction for road traffic. It acquires importance mainly
because of the National Highway passing through it. It links Kanyakumari and the rest of the country. Jamestown,
Azhagappapuram, Mettukudiyiruppu, Kanagappapuram, & Levinchipuram
are Anji’s neighbouring villages.
Anjugramam has abundant running water supply, mainly from
Pechiparai reservoir. It gets moderate rain twice a year. The
climate here is little warm. December and January in particular are
salubrious. The summer heat is somewhat neutralized by the breeze
blowing from the sea and the evergreen plains. The local population
is lively, industrious and courteous.
The faster growth of this village is characterized by the
mushrooming of shops & establishments, and other trading activities.
The cash crops produced in the hinterland find their way to vendors
here and convert themselves into cash. Both buyers and sellers
mutually benefit for their produce and efforts. The Village
Administration is responsible for fulfilling all the civic needs of
the inhabitants.
Anjugramam has great growth potential. Its present rate of
growth is proof of it. It is poised to become a bigger town,
encompassing the neighbouring villages, in the foreseeable future.
By such time it will reap immense economic and commercial gains.
Through re-investment of the cash produced, it can sustain its
future growth. It is safe to assume that this town will soon
become a vibrant commercial and trading center. |
